for some reason this brings to mind the song by the presidents of the USA about the kitty on the porch, but it is chickens and not a kitty.

water regrow from stalk and bulbs...

Image
spring onions - regrowing from bulbs on counter in water jar - have cut from them three times for cooking with and they continue to regrow  :)    romaine stalks regrowing - about a week along for the little one and about 1.5 to 2 weeks along for the bigger one. these are "organic" ones from the grocery store.   other romaine stalk regrowing - this one is from the stalk bought from the co-op and gotten from the farmer's market...one week's growth on this one. the co-op farmer's market stalk is growing better than the organic one from the grocery store. disclaimer - water has to be changed daily in each... :)

Regrowing Romaine

I have seen nice pictures of people using romaine stumps to regrow romaine lettuce on pinterest. I wanted to try it. I think I cut the stalk down too much. You are supposed to be able to put the stump in a shallow amount of water and watch it grow... 10/16/12 Placed the stump in the water. 10/22/12 This is week 1 or after 6 days...There are some small green sprouts appearing. I am having to refresh the water often. I think I picked a bad time to start this, because we are leaving today to go out of town for a week.   10/27/12 - about two weeks now...water was changed once while we were gone...returned today and had to cut away some rotten romaine on the side of the stump. So this attempt may flop altogether and I may have to start again. The lettuce stump looks very greenish...not so sickly green, but veggie green (to me). There are some new little shoots of green that have appeared...     10/30/2012... I have trashed the romaine stump attempt #1. It was growing r

Daily Accomplishments

Today I was able to get one of the hallways taped off and most of the bottom perimeter painted. I had to spackle about four spots I think. I stopped to let the spackle dry, so it could be sanded tomorrow.   The rest of the pineapple plants we repotted yesterday were brought in today. These three will have their winter home atop the piano.     We do not celebrate Halloween. Although, on Pinterest, I saw a cute idea about placing potting soil in the shelled out pumpkin and leaving some seeds behind. The plants/vines are supposed to generate on their own. I watched the little girl from next door today and she helped me feed the pumpkin guts to the chickens. We placed the soil in the pumpkin and left it on the porch steps to see what it would do.     I also was able to repot one of the aloe plants today. It has been regenerating on its own and needed to be divided out and repotted. The larger aloe was placed on the piano with the pineapples. The smaller aloe was left in th
