Minimalist Living and Life

I used Grammarly to grammar check this post, because even homeschooling educator mommies can make mistakes!!" It has been a whirlwind of events since May 30. Though in actuality, it has just been life. My younger son was supposed to be going off to camp in the mountains. A colleague from LDA had secured him a place in an adventuring camp. He has been before and loved it. It was a great experience for him before, but it is a bit beyond our finances to be able to afford him the opportunity to go. He was supposed to spend the weekend whitewater rafting, rappelling, and doing a ropes course. I had planned to spend the weekend in the mountains recuperating from what seems like a series of weekdays with no weekends. I was supposed to go on a foraging hike that I had scheduled some time back and wanted to go to the wild foods market. After he broke his wrist, he could no longer go to the camp, so I thought the mountain weekend was out. Alas, despite the broken arm, we left for the mo...

Can't Differentiate with the Common Core.

The nation is turning curricula matters over to the common core. As a former public school teacher, I understand how common core came about and why it is here. I can grasp the idea of why these were developed and the concept of them. The CCSS were developed to allow instructors and administrators to know what they should be teaching when. It was designed to help the teacher know what to teach and the parents know what their child should learn. The idea that you could go anywhere in the nation and walk into multiple same grade classrooms in multiple areas and find the same skills and concepts being taught to the same level is a great concept...a great thought. What it never takes into effect is children who are disabled, children from other cultures, children who need alternative paths of learning and instruction, etc.   Children are expected to be cookie cutters for the same design of instruction. We all learn different. We all learn at ...

Homeschool/Homestead

I am realizing we are getting our 8th/9th grade year wrapped up somewhat. We have 5 Latin I lessons left. There are about 6 weeks of grammar lessons left and about 2 units in the IEW-B series. I want to say there seems like there are about 30 more Algebra I lessons or so to work through. My son has chosen his last book of the year to read and complete a presentation project about the novel. We finished up Geography a bit ago. In Physical Science, there are about 4.5 lessons left...we are wrapping up and moving along. I have decided we are going to take a true Spring Break next week. Guitar lessons are about the only thing academic that will continue next week. We started some luffa plants indoors to transplant them when it became Spring. Interestingly enough, it became spring time and the temperatures dropped drastically here. So, now the luffas are growing well and it is freaking cold as all heck outside.  Sheesh.        The lemon and orange tr...
